…Death continues its work of thinning the ranks of the pioneer and older settlers of Manitowoc county and today two of the oldest residents of the county are listed among those who have been summoned. Deaths toll today is three in Manitowoc county, with all of advanced age. One of the three, Phillip Zych (sic), town of Newton, was probably the oldest settler of the county, having been here for seventy-one years, all that time having made his home on the same property which his parents settled when he came here with them as a boy of twelve, in 1854. Up to three weeks ago, Mr. Zych had never known a day of sickness, death resulting from infirmities of age, the sands of life having run out rapidly during the past three weeks since his decline set in. Mr. Zych was born at Tabort, Bohemia, May 2, 1842, being 83 at death. He was 12 years of age when his parents came to America and founded a home in the then wilderness of Manitowoc county at Newton. In 1869 he was married to Anna Bonk who preceded him in death in 1917. Since his retirement from the farm, Mr. Zych has been making his home with his son. He is survived by five children, Mrs. Nick Scherer and Mrs. Anton Pracki of this city, Jacob, Stephen and John of Newton. Two brothers, Frank and Albert, of this city and two sisters, Mrs. Emil Borcherdt of this city and Mrs. Anton Mally of Chicago, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive him. The funeral will be held Monday morning with services at St. Casimir’s Catholic church at 9 o’clock, the Rev. Szepinski officiating. Burial will be at St. Casimir’s cemetery.
