Joseph B. (Kelly) Schmatz, 82, of 4630 Hwy. 141, Manitowoc, died late Wednesday afternoon in Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be in St. Casimir Catholic Church, Northeim. The Rev. Charles W. Mocco will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded Mr. Schmatz by American Legion Drews- Bleser Post 88 of Manitowoc. Complete time and date details will be announced later by Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. Mr. Schmatz was born March 8, 1895 in the Town of Manitowoc Rapids, son of the late Frank and Anna Bauman Schmatz. He was a veteran of World War I and was a member of American Legion Drews-Bleser Post 88 for more than 35 years. He married Mary Schiels Jan. 14, 1925 in St. Ann Catholic Church, Milwaukee. He was employed with Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc. and also farmed in the Town of Newton for many years. He was a member of St. Casimir Holy Name Society and was treasurer of the church for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Schmatz celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1975. Survivors include his wife, three sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur and Marilyn Schmatz and Robert and Delores Schmatz of Manitowoc and Joseph and Lois Schmatz of Rt. 2, Cato; four daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Ray Musial and Fran and Harold McDonnell of Manitowoc, Marion and James Dhein of Sherwood and Ann and Milton Hassemer of Rt. 1, Whitelaw; two brothers, Frank X. Schmatz of Charlevoix, Mich., and Clarence Schmatz of Manitowoc; two sisters, Mrs. C.J. (Hilda) Wittak of Green Bay and Mrs. Ed (Cecilia) Tompkins of California, 25 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Five brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
