HIS FALL, A FATAL ONE Paul Szukalski, Newton Farmer Goes Down Embankment To His Death ON WAY HOME FROM CHURCH Horse Slipped, Harness Broke and Cutter is Precipitated Over Bank- Neck Broken By the Fall-Was 63 Years of Age Paul Szukalski, an aged farmer residing three-quarters of a mile from Newton corners, is dead as the result of injuries sustained in a fall over the embankment covering Pine creek in the town of Newton about noon Sunday. His spine was injured and the skull fractured, his death following a few hours after the accident. Mr. Szukalski and his wife attended services at St. Cassimere church Sunday morning and it was while on their way that the fatal accident occurred. They had reached Pine Creek, over which towers a high embankment and were within a short distance of their farm. The ground was bare of snow and the horse had hard work to pull the cutter. The harness gave way and the horse cutter and occupants were precipitated over the embankment. In the fall Mr. Szukalski sustained injuries which resulted in his death a few hours later. His wife was uninjured and the horse and cutter were found to be all right. As soon as the wife recovered her senses, help was summoned and the injured husband conveyed to a neighboring farm house. A doctor was hastily sent for an upon arrival did all in his power to alleviate the sufferings of the patient; but the spark of life soon left the body and the uncertainty of human existence had again been sadly and forcibly illustrated. The victim was one of the most prosperous farmers of the community and enjoyed a wide acquaintance in the county. He had many friends in the city to whom the news of his death will come as a shock. He was 63 years of age and the father of 7 children, four sons and three daughters, all of whom survive. One son John Szukalski, is a priest in Milwaukee and with the exception of two sons who assisted in conducting the farm, all the children are now living in Milwaukee and Chicago. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, March 12, 1900, Page 1 ******** From Der Nord Westen, 15 Mar. 1900: On Sun. Town Newton resident Paul Szukalski was returning home with his wife from a trip to Manitowoc when his horse shied and bolted in the vicinity of the bridge over Pine Creek. The bridge has no rails and the horse leaped into the 20-ft. deep ravine and the sleigh overturned. Mrs. Szukalski was unhurt, but her husband unfortunately broke his neck and died within a few minutes.
