Marie Rose Kutz Masiak, age 95, formerly of Newton, died on April 26, 2011, at the Elizabeth Residence in Bayside, where she resided since Sept. 2009. Marie was born in the town of Meeme on Oct. 21, 1915, daughter of the late Joseph and Theresa (Salm) Kutz. She had five sisters and one brother, all of whom preceded her in death. Marie enlisted in the Women's Army Corps in December 1942. She was stationed in London and Paris during the war, where she worked in a postal exchange and drove jeeps for Allied military personnel, including Air Chief Marshal Arthur Tedder. She received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in London, and was honorably discharged in 1945. Marie married Harry Thomas Masiak in Novembwer 1948, and couple purchased a farm in Newton. Her husband preceded her in death in 1993. The farm was Marie's residence until a few years before her death. For many years, she co-owned and operated Katherine-K, a women's clothing store. She operated the store in Sheboygan until her retirement in 1982. Marie was also active in St. Casimir's Catholic Church in Northeim, contributing floral arrangements and centerpieces to church events throughout the years. Marie was especially known for her green thumb and for the joy she derived from her flower gardens and the orchids in her greenhouse. Flowers thrived under her care, as did her cats and the many species of birds that she attracted to her birdfeeders. For all she did, Marie was known for the smile on her face and for being a good friend who was always willing to listen. Her beautiful smile will be missed. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) Nieces, nephews, other relatives also survive. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 5, 2011, at St. Francis of Assisi Church-Marshall, South 21st and Marshall streets, Manitowoc. The Rev. Richard Klingeisen will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will take place at St. Casimir Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11 a.m. Online condolences maybe sent to www.jensreinboldandpfeffer.com In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Lakeshore Humane Society or the Manitowoc Public Library.
